Dr Roger Tian graduated in 1996 from the National University of Singapore. After obtaining post-graduate qualifications and training in surgery, he obtained his Masters of Sports Medicine from the University of New South Wales in 2007. He is the first sports physician in Singapore to complete the local advanced subspecialty training programme in Sports Medicine.
His areas of interest include injury prevention and treatment, performance optimisation, strength and conditioning as well as sports nutrition. He has participated in the care of the country's elite athletes while working at the Sports Medicine Research Centre of the Singapore Sports Council. He has also contributed his expertise as a committee member of the Sports Medicine Association of Singapore and as a resource panel member of the MCYS Sports Safety Committee. He currently seats on the Ministry of Education’s Healthy Youth Committee, CGH’s Continuing Medical Education Committee, and the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Singapore Sports Institute.
Dr Tian is actively involved in research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching - he has published his work in international peer reviewed journals, and is currently a Clinical Tutor with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, as well as a Clinical Faculty member of the Singhealth Family Medicine Residency Program. He has contributed a chapter on running injuries in the book "Run for your Life", and is currently working on a Injury Prevention manual for the Ministry of Education.
Dr Tian served as Medical Director for the OSIM International Triathlon in 2007 & 2008, and has also provided medical cover for sports such as S-League/national team matches, triathlons, netball, HSBC Wakeboard World Cup, and the Aviva Singapore Open Badminton Championships. He served as a sports physician during the inaugural 2010 Summer Youth Olympics and the Asia Youth Games, 2009. Currently, he is the medical advisor to the Singapore Ice Skating Association. During his university days, he competed in canoeing and canoe-polo, and was also a canoeing instructor with the People's Association. He was also active in various sports including badminton, tennis, volleyball, sailing, trekking, yoga and pilates. His current sports interests include distance running, multi-disciplinary endurance events and functional training.
